El XXVI Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión fue celebrado el 4 de abril de 1981 en la Royal Dublin Society, Irlanda, correspondiendo las labores de presentación a Doireann Ní Bhríain. Cada país votaba con el sistema actual, es decir, de 1 a 8, 10 y 12 puntos respectivamente a sus 10 canciones favoritas. El número de países participantes fue de 20, debutando Chipre en el festival , la retirada de Italia y Marruecos, el retorno de Israel y Yugoslavia y Noruega volvió a dejar el marcador en 0 puntos.El país vencedor fue el Reino Unido con un grupo vistoso pero algo soso llamado Bucks Fizz y el tema "Making Your Mind Up" (Decídete), que obtuvo 136 puntos, 8 desde España. Curiosamente el tema ganador sólo recibió dos veces la máxima puntuación de 12 puntos: de Israel y Países Bajos. El tema suizo, que finalizó en cuarto puesto, recibió en cinco ocasiones los 12 puntos, incluidos los del Reino Unido.
Se gestaba así la cuarta victoria del Reino Unido en Eurovisión hasta ese momento.
Bucks Fizz se constituyó en banda en 1981 para ir expresamente a Eurovisión. El Reino Unido había encontrado un pequeño filón en los grupos pop setenteros, animosos y con mucho colorido así que decidió apostar nuevamente por esta fórmula. Inicialmente el grupo estuvo formado por Bobby G., Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan y Jay Aston, curiosamente tod@s rubi@s. Su éxito en Eurovisión les catapultó a nivel mundial.Si bien acudieron a Dublín como favoritos, durante las primeras rondas de votaciones el tema no despegaba y lo tuvieron difícil frente a Alemania, que les empataba a falta de dos votaciones, y que podía haberles ganado en la última. Finalmente sacaron cuatro puntos de diferencia a los alemanes.
El tema tuvo un gran éxito en todo el continente llegando a ser el número 1 en Reino Unido y obteniendo una gran fama en Australia. A lo largo del mundo vendieron más de cuatro millones de copias de su canción. Entre 2004 y 2007 la BBC utilizó el título de la canción para dar nombre a su preselección.
Durante la actuación llamó la atención la longitud de las faldas de las dos componentes femeninas y la combinación de colores verde, rojo, amarillo y blanco. La letra de la canción no tiene mucho sentido si bien habla sobre la decisión de establecer una relación de pareja seria.
