El XLVI Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión tuvo lugar el 12 de mayo de 2001 en Copenhague. Los presentadores fueron Natasja Crone Back y Søren Pilmark. Todos sus comentarios contenían rimas y pareados y estaban llenos de bromas, atrayendo las críticas de mucha gente, especialmente del comentarista de la televisión británica Terry Wogan. Sus constantes opiniones sarcásticas sobre los anfitriones, a los que se refería como "Doctor Muerte" y "Ratoncita Pérez", ofendió tanto a los daneses que la British Broadcasting Corporation se vio en la obligación de disculparse públicamente.El recinto, el estadio de fútbol Parken Stadium, fue el mayor de la historia del festival acogiendo a 38.000 espectadores. A muchos partipantes el escenario les pareció demasiado grande. Los principales favoritos a ganar este certamen eran la representante francesa Natasha St. Pier, Grecia con el dúo Antique y los anfitriones con Rollo & King. David Civera y Fabrizio Faniello también sonaban entre los favoritos a poder ganar esta edición.
Finalmente Tanel Padar y Dave Benton se convirtieron en los ganadores inesperados de este Festival con Everybody, representando a Estonia, siendo la primera vez que un país del este ganaba Eurovisión.
Tanel Padar nació el 27 de octubre de 1980 y su fama llegó al ganar en 1999 un concurso de talentos de la televisión estona. Dave Benton, por su parte, nació el 31 de enero de 1951 en la isla caribeña de Aruba y con 20 años se fue a vivir a Estados Unidos. Como batería y corista trabajó para The Drifters, Tom Jones, Billy Ocean, José Feliciano y los Platters. Ambos se hicieron acompañar por la boyband 2XL.
"Everybody" es el título de la canción ganadora y fue cantada en inglés. La letra es una invitación a la fiesta y Dave Benton se ha convertido en el ganador de mayor edad y también en la primera persona de color en ganar Eurovisión. El tema obtuvo 198 puntos y recibió la máxima puntuación de Países Bajos, Lituania, Letonia, Turquía, Reino Unido, Eslovenia, Polonia, Malta y Grecia.
Personalmente me llevé una sorpresa mayúscula y nunca entendí como pudo ganar semejante tema insustancial y aburrido. Muchos eurofans creímos que la noche era de Grecia y Antique, con una de sus mejores entradas en la historia helena. En resumen, uno de los peores temas que ha ganado el festival.
